Growing up in a large family of 12 children, she was surrounded by music from an early age. Despite her humble beginnings, Kanam's passion for music shone through, leading her to pursue a degree in international business in 1991.

After completing her education, Kanam decided to follow her true calling and studied singing at the prestigious Psalmody Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.
